Smart locks are modern door locks that replace traditional mechanical locks with electronic systems. These locks eliminate the need for physical keys and allow users to unlock doors using digital credentials. They include a smartphone app or typing a PIN code on a keypad or touchscreen. The main components of a typical smart lock include the physical lock installed in a door, the digital key, a secure Bluetooth or WiFi connection, and the management app.

Key Features of the Assure Lock 2

Yale’s Assure Lock 2 integrates seamlessly with Swiftlane’s app and cloud-based management platform. This enables building tenants and property managers to manage front-door and unit-door entries all on the same system. How Residents Benefit from Home Door Smart Locks

Keyless Entry / Never Locked Out: With smart door locks, residents use their phone or a PIN to open their unit doors. They never get locked out. Physical keys are no longer required but a model of the Assure Lock 2 with a key backup is available.

Easy Visitor and Guest Access: There’s no need for lock boxes, keys hidden under the doormat, or key handoffs for guests and visitors. Visitors can be assigned their own temporary PIN or digital pass. This also works great in buildings that allow AirBNB or VRBO-style home shares.

Convenient Entry for Hired Helpers: With temporary PIN codes or remote door unlock, residents can provide convenient home access for deliveries, pet and plant care, child care, cleaning help, and other maintenance workers.

Remote Access from Anywhere: With a smart lock, you can unlock the door on the go from wherever you are, whether at work, running errands, or on vacation. You can check door status from anywhere and even get notifications if the door is left ajar.

Simplicity with One App: With Swiftlane smart lock integration, building tenants and condo owners can use the same app for managing the Swiftlane front door intercom and their individual door deadbolt. The app can also be used for doors of building common spaces. These include gyms, mail rooms, storage areas, supply closets, restrooms and more, that are outfitted with Swiftlane’s smart locks from Yale or other providers.

Optional hands-free entry: With optional Auto-Unlock, you won’t need to touch the lock or your phone. The lock detects when the user is at the door and automatically opens the deadbolt. With Auto-Lock, the device detects when the door has been closed and automatically locks it.

How Property Managers Benefit from Home Door Smart Locks

Return on Investment and Cost Savings: Reduce rekeying costs for each new tenant or subtenant, eliminate lost key replacements, and the use of outdated lock boxes. Building supers don’t have to manage countless keys for every unit. Reduce administrative overhead and labor costs with remote management to assign or remove PINs when tenants move in or out. Simplify with a single platform for building entryway doors and unit doors.

Assign Access Levels: Using Swiftlane’s cloud-based platform, you can assign different tenants and building staff different access levels. This is done to control entry to gyms, mailrooms, or secured facilities like HVAC and elevator controls. Real estate agents can get access to show empty units.

Investment in Security:  An investment in unit smart locks provides similar security benefits to installing a Swiftlane intercom for building entryways. In an era of resident safety concerns and rising package theft, show tenants that you are investing in their safety with locks that keep a log of all entries.

Convenience for Tenants: Tenants want convenient ways to manage in-home deliveries, pet care, child care, cleaning people, and house guests, which smart locks provide.

Improve Building Aesthetics: Smart locks on unit doors help elevate the building design aesthetics to raise property values and rent potential. Meanwhile, the building can be uncluttered from numerous lockboxes by enabling tenant keyless entry.  What’s best, it works on most existing doors with an easy installation.

Security Enhanced with Real-time Data: View a 24/7 activity feed and receive real-time notifications so you know who got access and when.

Frequently Asked Questions for Smart Locks

Are smart locks safer than key locks?

Smart locks can be as safe, or sometimes safer, than traditional key locks, depending on their design and features. Keyless models eliminate the risk of lockpicking or key duplication. Many smart locks also offer features like two-factor authentication, access logs, and temporary passcodes that can enhance security. Battery failure, hacking, or malfunctioning apps could pose risks. A strong security setup, regular software updates, and choosing a reliable brand can minimize these risks.

Can I put a smart lock on my apartment?

If you are a do-it-yourselfer, you may be able to install the Assure Lock 2 on your apartment. Since landlords and supers typically need to be able to get emergency access to all apartment units, check with your landlord first to make sure they approve of the installation and have their own emergency access PIN.

Is my door lock compatible?

Assure Lock 2 is compatible with doors of 1-3/4” to 2-1/4” thickness. It can work on doors with a singular borehole, where the deadbolt provides the door latch, and there is no handle lever. Or they can install in a more traditional double borehole, where the upper hole is for a deadbolt separate from the door handle, as long as the distance between the center of the two holes is at least 4”.

Assure Lock 2 is incompatible with mortise-style door preps, where the door latch and deadbolt are integrated into the side of the door in one long panel. For a solution for mortise-style doors, see our smart lock products by Igloohome.

For more information, visit Yale’s Compatibility Checker for visuals and video describing compatible door types.

Can the Assure Lock 2 work with outdoor-facing doors?

Yes, the lock can work in a range of conditions including:

  • Outside: -22 F to 140 F
  • Inside: 5 F to 158 F.

However, while the keypad side of the deadbolt can be outdoors, the knob and battery side of the device must be located indoors. The lock doesn’t work for outside gates where both sides of the lock are in the outdoors.

Does it work with left-handed and right-handed doors?

Yale’s Assure line locks fit both right-handed and left-handed doors and will set the correct handling during the initial set-up process.

What happens if the Wi-Fi goes out?

The smart door lock keeps working even if the Wi-Fi goes out simply by entering your PIN code on the keypad or touchscreen. The Wi-Fi network must be re-established in order to use remote unlock or update PIN codes using the Swiftlane app.

What are the disadvantages of smart locks?

With the convenience of never having to carry a traditional key, there are very few disadvantages to smart locks. Their only drawback is that they periodically require a battery replacement, but they use widely available AA batteries.

What happens if the batteries go dead?

The Yale Assure Lock 2 is offered in an option model with key backup. With this model, you can use a backup metal key to unlock the door when the batteries have died.

For the unkeyed model, you can jumpstart the deadbolt by holding a 9V battery against the bottom of the keypad.

How do I change the lock batteries?

The battery cover is located on the interior side of the door inside the apartment or office. Slide the battery cover up, pull the ribbon in the battery cover to pull out the 4 AA batteries, and insert the 4 new AA Batteries. Reinstall the black cover by sliding it down.

Can these work as commercial smart locks?

Yes. The Yale Assure Lock 2 smart locks can work for commercial applications, including retail and office buildings that use Swiftlane intercoms.  The smart locks are perfect for securing individual offices, supply closets, IT equipment rooms, copy rooms, and restroom facilities. The office or facility manager can control all the locks centrally on the Swiftlane cloud-based management platform.

What are mortise smart locks?

Mortise locks are a specific type of lock that fits into a large pocket (or mortise) in the door. Mortise smart locks are the smart versions of these traditional locks. They are commonly used in commercial settings or higher-end residential properties because of their robust build. Assure Lock 2 smart locks are not compatible with mortise-style doors. For mortise doors, see our smart lock products from Igloohome.
